New Berlin American Legion Post 348 donates Smart TV to Chase Memorial

NEW BERLIN — The American Legion Frank H. Arnold Post 348 Auxiliary, located at Academy Street, decided to donate a Smart TV to the Chase Memorial Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in New Berlin.
Legion member Elaine Lennon said, “When we asked how we could support Chase Memorial Nursing Home and Rehabilitation, where many veterans are residents and on staff, they suggested a new Smart TV.”
“Smart technology offers a wider range of movie options, including DVD and network services for the residents and expands the range of music channels,” she said.
“The new Smart TV is located in the community sun room in the south solarium and is enjoyed by all,” said Lennon.
The American legion Auxiliary advocates for veterans, educates citizens, mentors the youth, and promotes patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.
Legion member Mary Lyon said, “Our mission is to remind all within our community of the importance of patriotism and public service and support and honor the sacrifices of our veterans and those serving today.”
“The American Legion Auxiliary honors veterans by supporting the local hometown hero banner program in not only the village of New Berlin but the Town of New Berlin which includes South New Berlin, Pittsfield, and Columbus. Also, grave sites in five cemeteries are marked and they assist in the free post memorial day picnic,” she added.
Lennon explained community activities are presented to continually increase awareness of the contribution and sacrifices of service members, such as; annual Veterans Day breakfast at Unadilla Valley Central School, chicken barbecues, pancake breakfasts, and spaghetti dinners. In August the Legion operates a food concession at the race weekend at Unadilla Motorcross concession stand.
Annual raffles help fund scholarships for UVCS students with local student participation in the new York State “Girls State Program” where high school students learn (through role play) about their government. This years recipient was Nicole Ramsaran.
Title holding members of the American Legion are Joy Lawrence, Linda Hoxie, Lynn Walton, Teresa Clarke, Lynn Walton, Brandy Pasanen and Mary Lyon. Currently there are 30 members.
The first president of the American Legion Auxiliary in New Berlin was elected in 1947. The Frank H. Arnold post # 348 American Legion was formed in New Berlin shortly after World War One. Currently, the president is Joy Lawrence.
Spouses and family members of veterans who served or are presently serving in the military may join.
