Federal COVID emergency declaration ends

CHENANGO COUNTY — The federal public health emergency declaration for COVID-19 expired on May 11, 2023. While the end of the public health emergency is a significant event, COVID-19 remains a threat.

Coronavirus was the fourth leading cause of death in the United States in 2022, and it will likely remain a leading cause of death in 2023, especially for our most vulnerable residents.

The end of the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency does not mean COVID-19 is no longer a circulating, and community members should continue to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, get tested, and stay away from others when they appear sick or are experiencing any kind of COVID-19 symptoms.

We know so many people continue to be affected by COVID-19, particularly seniors, people who are immunocompromised, and people with disabilities. That is why our response to the spread of COVID-19 remains a public health priority.

The Chenango County Department of Public Health will continue to offer free COVID-19 vaccines at this time. Please call for dates and times and to make an appointment at 607-337-1660.
