Police identify woman involved in fatal North Norwich crash

NORTH NORWICH – Last week, a Norwich resident was killed when the car they were driving was stuck by an SUV at a North Norwich intersection.

Police said three people were injured and one of the drivers, 82-year-old Lorena Mayes, was killed in the collision.

On September 12, at approximately 2:11 p.m., New York State Police at Norwich were dispatched by Chenango County 911 to a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Highway 12 and County Road 32 in the town of North Norwich.

An investigation determined that a 75-year-old male of Sherburne was operating a Ford Explorer and traveling north on State Highway 12.

Mayes was operating a Buick Lucerne and stopped on County Highway 32 at the intersection of State Highway 12 when she pulled out into the direct path of the Ford Explorer. She was transported to Chenango Hospital but did not survive.

A 91-year-old female passenger of the Buick was transported by Norwich Ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The 75-year-old operator of the Ford Explorer and a 66-year-old female passenger were both transported to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown. They sustained what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.
