SHERBURNE – A large portion of Chenango County senior citizens are dependent on support from local organizations such as the Sherburne Adult Day Health Center.
The center is recognizing the important role of local staff during National Adult Day Health Services Week.
Having an Adult Day Health Care Program in Chenango County is extremely important as it allows individuals to stay in their homes, explained President and CEO of Crouse Community Center DJ Raux. It provides seniors another valuable choice to help them stay independent for as long as possible, he said.
The center is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is located at 38 West State Street in Sherburne.
“Our staff of certified nursing assistants (CNA) and registered nurse (RN) site manager are truly amazing and ensure every program registrant receives the individualized care needs they may have while at our program,” he added.
According to Center Director Kate Hatton, the center is one of two adult day centers affiliated with Crouse Community Center; a non-profit Nursing Home in Morrisville and is the only approved medical based day center for adults ages 21 and over in Chenango County.
“If you look at our population right now, especially in Chenango County, we have a lot of folks aged 62 and older,” Hatton said. “If we can provide a service keeping them in our community and giving them the benefit of staying in their own beds at night. This helps prevent them from moving to assisted living or nursing homes. So, if we can keep someone in their town, living in their home as long as possible, I believe this is a great service.”
Hatton said she has been with the center since 2004; as a junior in high school and has held her directorship position since February 2022. She expressed her deep connection with Chenango County and said everyday when she goes to work, she knows she’s helping someones grandparent stay in their own house. She said being a Chenango County resident adds to the personal commitment and desire to make a difference in the community.
“Program Manager Tracy Cowen has 22 years experience as an RN and her experience includes Hospice and Critical Care,” said Hatton. “She interacts with our registrants from their first phone call and beyond. Her work day includes coordinating individual care plans; identifying and treating medical interventions and needs; and communicating directly with families, caregivers, and medical providers to ensure continuity of services for everyone involved.”
Hatton explained having Tracy on site is truly a benefit because of the way she makes each person feel valued as an individual.
Over the years, she has built professional relationships with local doctors and community caregivers. Hatton said her dedication to her work trickles down to everyone and has created an atmosphere of respect, hard work, fun, and a lot of care.
“Our CNA's provide basic health care under the RN’s supervision and also help with hot meals, showers, activities, exercises, socialization, and more,” she said. “We have our own transportation to pick up individuals from their homes and drive them back after 2 p.m.”
Center CNA Sharon Branagan said she has the opportunity to meet nice people from many different backgrounds and their days are filled with fun activities creating lasting memories.
Branagan said, “It’s really an honor to help them stay in their communities.”
Hatton said a volunteer from the YMCA in Norwich brings the Silver Sneakers Program to the center every other week. The program is designed for seniors and offers light impact with high results.
“Medicaid, Spanish Medicaid, and Veterans Affair's insurance pays 100% of cost,” said Hatton. “Private pay is also accepted. The center's daily fee is $160 and includes transportation, two hot meals, and all services received. Participants can choose which days they wish to join; from one day to five, it’s up to the individuals needs.”
Tours are given and if interested, the center will request medical information from the individuals doctor and once obtained; they can join. Not all participants will need medical assistance but blood pressure and vitals are taken to identify and prevent medical issues from happening.
The center does not have therapy animals but they are welcome and must be well behaved and fully vaccinated.
