Community support is needed: Chenango SPCA at full capacity

Girl Scout Troop 60378 from Pharsalia collected donations for the shelter by holding two outdoor movie nights. The CSPCA, located at 6160 County Road 32, is reaching out to the community for food and cleaning needs to fill dangerously empty shelves. Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and by appointment only on Sundays and Thursdays. (Photo by CSPCA Facebook)

NORWICH — What happens after the seasonal kitten litter explosion? Cats and kittens are brought into the Chenango Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA) and fill the shelter quickly; taking it to full capacity. The CSPCA is reaching out to the community for food and cleaning needs to fill dangerously empty shelves.

The CSPCA is located at 6160 County Road 32 and is open to the public Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and by appointment only on Sundays and Thursdays.

“I would like to start with a preemptive thank you as the CSPCA has survived on the generosity of regular members of the community for years, if not decades and has never been set up to be a County Agency or to receive County or Municipal support,” said CSPCA Executive Director Patrick McLaughlin.

He said items needed are paper towels, pine-sol, bleach, and cat litter; the clumping kind. They usually buy Easy Clean clumping litter at Country Max and Purina Tidy Cats. The Cornell veterinarians gave a recommendation to switch to clumping litter as a daily complete emptying of kitty litter isn’t actually necessary if not shared with other cats. That enabled them to switch and saves some money.

Food for kittens is another big need. Pate food is easier for kittens to eat and meat baby foods is really easy for kittens to eat and digest.

“Everything we have accomplished has been done so by members of the community and we have a small staff here that does the hands on work everyday but that work is impossible without the generosity of people around us and incredible compassion this community has for the animals that are here with us,” he said.

“In animal welfare we call them companion animals a lot and it’s very clear the people of Chenango really do see them that way; as companions,” McLaughlin said. “We’re not a rich county and there are a lot of people that struggle but it’s so uplifting to see people who might be struggling themselves; reach out and do something for animals who are even more helpless than they are.”

McLaughlin said “We’re at the point now that whatever additional animals we take in, we have to be creative how we house them. There may be people that might have a legitimate need to surrender an animal or our dog control contracts bring in animals almost on a daily basis; those we have to take. There are some spaces in the building that aren’t really intended for animal housing but we can set them up temporarily until somebody adopts one of the other animals we have and then we can shift things around.

He explained that by utilizing software to track the animals coming in, he noticed there is an annual explosion in the cat population. He said they had a little over 50 cats in February but now they have almost 140 and that it’s called kitten season and it just happens.

“We have a large number of stray cats in this community and when someone sees a cat and their kittens, they bring them in here for shots, etc. As the results show, our cat population goes up,” he said. “Our dogs are more steady and we have 17 dogs. All but two dogs are in regular kennels and the two kennels that are set aside for behavior isolation are now being used for the additional dogs.”

McLaughlin said they have a promotion coming up with Bill Rapp Subaru starting on October 1, for the entire month or until 31 animals are adopted. They will receive up to $100 for every animal adopted and that will help drop the adoption rates for the month.

CSPCA Finance Manager Brian Adsit said she loves working at the shelter and seeing the animals behind the scenes. She feels a part of the environment and enjoys seeing the animals adopted out.

A few Facebook followers immediately jumped in and supported the CSPCA's need and took in donations to support the well being of the sheltered animals.

Norwich business owner Krystal Lee of Krystal's Sweetheart Daycare held a fundraiser and said she will be dropping donations this week.

Resident Barb Murin said she dropped off paper towels, a couple cases of peanut butter, and cleaning supplies. She gave thanks to Chenango SPCA for all they do for the animals.

“They were very busy when I was there so I hope some animals found forever homes,” she added.

The CSPCA will be at Saturday in the park with Chobani for the next five Saturdays and hopes community members stop to support the local no-kill shelter. McLaughlin said Saturdays in the Park may be a good time to get to know them and in terms of bringing us items, they would appreciate any cash donations, food or cleaning items but in small amounts; as they will have limited space in their vehicles to haul donations.

They also offer a Story Time with a craft at the shelters cat sculpture room from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. on October 7 and continuing the first Saturday of every month. All ages are welcome and there is never a fee.

Photos of animals found and brought to the shelter have been shared on Facebook at Lost and Found pets from Norwich and surrounding areas, New York lost and found pet group, Chenango pets who need homes, Missing pets in Chenango or surrounding areas, CNY pets, and Pets lost and found around CNY.
