NORWICH — The Chenango Greenway Conservancy held its 2nd annual Race to the Face 5K and Mountain Goat Challenge in Norwich over the weekend.

The 5K Race to the Face started in West Park; coinciding with Saturday in the Park with Chobani. The first part of the race, competitors went up the Quarry and then back to the park. The second part of the event was The Mountain Goat Challenge. The course was the same; up to the quarry overlook, but in order to win this race, participants had to reach the Face and ring the bell.

Greenway Conservancy Manager Inez Moutarde said, “It was a glorious autumn day; perfect for running or walking. It was a bit challenging headed up but the view made it worthwhile.”

This years winner of the Mountain Goat Challenge and the 5K was Anthony Bourn; reaching the Face first, he rang the bell with a time of 10:15 and then continued his energized pace to also win the 5K; with a time of 27:38.
“Everyone put in a great effort,” she added. “There were a lot of smiling faces on the course.”

According to the Greenway Conservancy web page the challenge is to challenge yourself. It's not all about speed; it's about endurance and determination. The 5K course winds through beautiful scenery at the quarry with many switchback trails that descend to the finish line.
The Chenango Greenway Conservancy is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) public charity organized in 2006 to develop a network of multiple use recreation trails in and around the City of Norwich.
The organization acquired the Stone Quarry property in December 2021 following an intense community fundraising effort, and is now developing plans to improve access and opportunities for outdoor recreation at the site.
