NORWICH — Calling all community trekkers and car lovers. The 5th annual Half-K Classic Walk and Roll fundraiser is from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, October 8th in East Park in downtown Norwich. Rain or shine.

Walk, run, or ride the 0.6 mile race in a classic car to lunch at the reception held at the Northeast Classic Car Museum. Partake in refreshments, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.

Registration is $35 for members and $40 for non members. An additional $15 will provide a ride in a classic car. Tickets can be purchased in person or at www.achieveny.org/achieve-events/half-k-classic/

ACHIEVE Vice President of Development and Donor Relations Preston Evans said the event starts at about 10:30 when participants can register to get their packet which includes a t-shirt, race bib, sticker and ticket to the Classic Car Museum.

He said the 0.6 mile race/walk will begin at about 11:15 and will snake through a few blocks downtown to end at the museum where a lunch reception awaits. The event concludes at 1 p.m. but anyone can enjoy the museum anytime after that.

Evans said, “ This event has helped drive the sense of unity with the Chenango ARC chapter and a feeling of all there counties acting as “one-agency”. Additionally, it’s a great way to get out into the community in a very public way, allowing community members an opportunity to see and interact with those of varying levels of ability, which only furthers continuing to break stigmas that still surround disability.”

“This is one of ACHIEVE’s four signature fundraisers, and all proceeds from the event go to fund supports and services for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities we support across Broome, Chenango, and Tioga Counties,” he added.

Evans said ACHIEVE is a chapter of the ARC NEW YORK, and unified with the Chenango ARC chapter in 2017. In 2018, there was a push by the Board of Directors to develop an event or fundraiser in Chenango County, to help drive the spirit of unification and create a more cohesive organization, regardless of region.

Evans had heard about a Half-K fundraiser in Texas and brought the idea to the team. They felt it was accessible for both the community and the people they support. The low impact activity proved anyone could participate, regardless of ability. The first Half-K Classic Walk and Roll took place in September 2019.
