NORWICH — Coffee with the Chiefs is a twice-annual event where City of Norwich residents can bring their public safety questions and concerns and talk with the city's fire and police chief. The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 21 at Kozmos's Hometown Eatery on Broad Street.
Visitors can enjoy free refreshments and talk one-on-one with City of Norwich Police Chief Reuben Roach and Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino while learning more about what their respective departments do and how they operate.
Recently Norwich Mayor Brian Doliver said they feel it’s important and they’re finding any way they can to reach out. He said the fire department has always had an open house so they can reach out to kids and schools, talk to the kids about fire safety. The police department does certain things and the Citizen’s Academy will get going too.
“So we’re hoping to continue to find different ways to talk to the public about what we do. It's important," said Doliver.
Papelino said he encourages residents with questions or concerns about fire safety or the Norwich Fire Department to come out to Coffee with the Chiefs to speak with him and receive free smoke alarms.
"If they’ve got questions I’d love to have people come and ask and try to understand, and help them learn a little bit more about the fire department and what we do, and how we do it, and why we do it the way we do," said Papelino. "If you’ve got a question or a concern, the only way either you gain knowledge or it gets fixed is you communicate it. Anything that somebody’s got a question on or they’ve got an issue about something, come and ask."
Attendees within the fire district can sign up to receive three smoke detectors that will be installed at a later date by a member of the fire department. He said they will install the detectors to make sure they are put up.
Papelino recommends homeowners have a smoke alarm in every bedroom, in the "common area" just outside of the bedrooms, in living rooms and dining rooms, and at least one smoke alarm on each floor of the home.
Additionally, he said putting a CO detector on every floor is extremely important, especially for those who use natural gas, propane, or fuel oil in their homes.
Roach said they are still putting together a platform for the Citizens Police Academy that will possibly roll out in the spring and he will be available to answer any questions during the event.
