FOOTBALL: Greene hampered by poor start

Trumansburg 60, Greene 19
TRUMANSBURG – Greene quickly responded to Trumansburg’s opening touchdown, but the remainder of that opening quarter was somewhat of a nightmare.
The Blue Raiders scored 37 points in the opening quarter against the Trojans (3-3), this after clinging to an early 7-6 lead.
“Honestly, we had a very emotional week for the team, and we were flat coming out,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We were just a deer in the headlights to start the game. I’ve never seen an offensive blitz like that.”
The Blue Raiders, coming off a blowout loss to Moravia, showed no ill effects on offense scoring quickly against a Trojans defense that had given up just over 13 points per game over the previous three weeks.
“(Trumansburg) is a very good team and has great speed,” Gorton said. “They have seven starters back on the line and in the backfield that have played three years together. We’ve had some good games against them in the past, but we got off to such a bad start, we were never able to overcome it.”
Following that opening T’burg touchdown, the Trojans’ Derek Renfer returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for the touchdown.
From there, it was 30 unanswered points from the host club that came in blitzkrieg fashion.
The Trojans settled down for about a quarter and a half, Gorton said.
Joel Vielandi hauled in a 51-yard TD pass from Jaden Eroshevich in the second quarter, and Eroshevich hooked up with Bill Dunlap on an 18-yard TD toss cutting the margin to 37-19.
“We made some adjustments and shut them down in the second quarter and part of the third quarter,” Gorton said. “But we made some uncharacteristic mistakes that we haven’t made all season.”
Three holding penalties negated two big plays that would have likely set up touchdowns, and a third holding penalty put the Trojans in an untenable down-and-distance situation.
“We shot ourselves in the foot with missed assignments and penalties,” Gorton said. “It was very unlike us. I told the kids we’re not going to watch the film, and just focus on next week’s game.”
The Trojans host winless South Lewis Friday in an intersectional matchup.
