SOUTH OTSELIC – The Otselic Valley Vikings girls soccer team hosted Sackets Harbor for the opening round of the Section III, Class D tournament. OV held a 3-1 lead before it slipped away at the feet of the Patriots, who scored four goals in the second half to win 5-3.
Within two minutes of the start of the contest, the Vikings got on the board as Susannah Lyon scored on a rebounded shot. Sackets Harbor had possession and tried passing it at the top of the box, but Lyon broke it up.
The Patriots earned a penalty kick to tie it at one. However, OV took the 2-1 lead at halftime with a header from Rachel Loomis off a pass from Kali Waltz on a corner kick.
The Vikings kept their confidence early in the second half as Rachel Loomis struck again. Susannah Lyon had control of the ball but her shot fell short and Loomis picked up on that and crashed the net herself. Lyon was credited with the assist.
Sackets Harbor’s strength powered through with under 20 minutes to go in regulation. The Vikings could not stop the Patriots’ Peyton Britton, who ended up scoring four goals.
OV’s goalkeeper Carlie Golden made six saves in the loss.
The Vikings finished the season with a 10-4-1 record under new coaches Jordan Klein and Summer Lyon this year. Senior Rachel Loomis led the team with 23 goals and two assists while freshman Makayla Mills finished second with 10 goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Carlie Golden made a total of 59 saves in her junior year.
Great effort Vikings and good luck seniors!
