OXFORD – Coming off celebrating yet another milestone for head coach Bob Conway, the Bainbridge-Guilford Lady Bobcats added on to his win total with a 55-37 victory against the Oxford Blackhawks. B-G is behind Greene in the MAC Division II standings with a 6-5 record and are 2-1 in the division itself.
Both teams started the contest at a consistent level with each team’s defense strong on the rebound and going back and forth with steals. B-G picked up the pace rather early with 20 points in the first quarter due to tremendous efforts from Jayslin Henderson, Peyton Umbra, and Johnna Henderson.
Jayslin Henderson played tough on defense, stealing the ball multiple times with the Bobcats quickly moving to their end of the court, where Umbra found an open Johnna Henderson. Johnna fired up in the first quarter with 12 points in her total 20 on the night.
Jayslin Henderson played fierce throughout the entire game, matching up with either Oxford’s Jocie Finch or Ava Benjamin. It didn’t matter who she guarded because she went after the ball for almost every jump ball on the floor. She also finished with a triple-double with 11 points, 12 steals, and 10 rebounds. Marissa Mayo had 10 points with three threes as Umbra knocked in one three for seven points in the win.
Oxford had trouble at the start on offense as B-G controlled the first few minutes of play with a 10-0 run. Raya Warner scored Oxford’s first basket at the 5:35 mark and the team was able to improve from there. The Blackhawks were also held in the second quarter, but finally found their rhythm in the second half.
Emmalee Reiss led the Blackhawks with eight points, where her efforts greatly helped in the fourth quarter. She scored four straight points late, including a free-throw and being open for a three-pointer. Margaret Rovente had seven points while Leah Oliver finished with five points in the loss.
B-G (6-5) hosts Sidney next Friday at 7:15 p.m. while Oxford is right back on the court this evening at Walton/Downsville at 7:15 p.m.
