4-H offers snowshoe intro for youth at Cook Park

GREENE — The Chenango County 4-H Youth Development invites youth to join a free snowshoe event from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on February 6, at Cook Park located at 189 Parks Road in Greene.
Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) 4-H Educator Erica Clark said the snowshoeing program is part of an outdoor series with the Chenango County Youth Bureau, which is open to 4-H and non 4-H youth ages 8 to 18, in Chenango County.

She said snowshoes will be available to borrow but must be indicated on the form. Also, she added if there is no snow, participants will explore one of the few trails at the park.
“This is a great opportunity for youth to experience a fun and unique activity during winter,” said Clark.
She said participants will meet other youth and learn how to snowshoe in a very pretty park filled with trails, a pond, and lean-tos.
“Kids and adults seem to enjoy snowshoeing and learning how to walk with them on their feet,” Clark added. “It can be a great way to navigate when there's a lot of snow and firmer crust on top.”
Clark said 4-H youth and non 4-H youth are welcome but non 4-H youth will need a parent/guardian to sign the acknowledgment of risk form at the start of the event.
“We offered cross county skiing a few weekends ago at Friends of Rogers and I think it's important to show youth that we can enjoy winter and offer them different ways to get outdoors and explore,” she said.
Clark said not only is the snowshoe event free but it's also free to become a Chenango 4-H member.
