GREENE – The 2024 MAC league champions were ready to go after the first round bye in the Section IV, Class C tournament. The Greene Trojans' girls' basketball team was fired up as they've been all season. On Friday, the Lady Trojans hosted Marathon, where they dominated with a big 51-20 victory over the Olympians. This win only gives them a chance to show their worth in the semi-finals, where the competition only gets tougher.
Greene knew that they had to make a few adjustments from the MAC championship game and everything clicked for them on their home court. The Trojans' offense played steady throughout the first three quarters and limited Marathon to single-digit scoring, only proving how strong their defense has been all season. Greene was able to build themselves a 30-point lead to start the second half and settled in from there, allowing their subs to finish the game.
Abby Yahner played tremendous on both ends of the court and ended up with a double-double for her hard work. She scored a team-high 15 points and was successful at collecting 10 rebounds under the basket. Josie Dutcher helped out defensively with stealing the ball and driving to the basket, where she scored 10 points. Lyla Biefeldt got into the action straight off the bench to also add 10 points with a pair of three-pointers. Claire Flanagan also added two three's for six points in the win.
Greene now advances to the semi-finals and will face Moravia on Tuesday, Feb 27 at 7:45 p.m. The semi-finals and the finals for Class C will be held at Tompkins Cortland Community College, where admission will be charged through GOFan digital ticketing.
