GREENE – The official sport of high school girls flag football is approaching three years in the making, but for the Greene Trojans, it is brand new to them as they’ve added themselves into the action this season. Greene joins Norwich as the only Chenango County flag football team so far, but there should be more in years to come.
Greene hosted Horseheads, who had experience playing at the start of the sport, for the first flag football game in school history. Greene got off to an early start, but couldn’t hold Horseheads in the final minutes. Greene fell 25-18, but had a lot of fun and really got hands-on experience to learn the game.
After both teams got the feel for each other to start the game, Greene found its rhythm with quarterback Audra Doll taking a big run to the end zone to score Greene’s first ever touchdown. The Trojans held Horseheads on their next possession, which gave them the momentum to score again on offense.
On fourth down, Greene went for it and came up big with another Audra Doll run. Molly Cornell then took over quarterback duties and found Nadia Brown for a nice pass, picking up another first down. Molly took off running herself to score the second touchdown of the game. Horseheads had to ball for the final two minutes of the first half and made it a 12-6 game at halftime.
Both teams had a slow start to the second half until Horseheads tied the game at the 12:42 mark. Greene knew they had to keep going and had to find a big play to catch the Blue Raiders off guard and they did. Molly Cornell found Allison James wide open and she was able to get past defenders behind her to score the go-ahead touchdown. Greene was up 18-12, but there was still plenty of time left. However, Horseheads tied the game and found strength in the final moments to score the game-winner as well.
Greene tried to keep steady on the pass plays, but the Blue Raiders caught on and picked up two interceptions that put them in scoring position.
Greene did well in their first official game and can only improve as they head to Chenango Valley on April 3 at 6 p.m.
