Softball: Oxford fights back, but Greene holds on for the win

GREENE – Coming off a big win over Dryden on Saturday, the Greene Trojans softball team stayed home to face neighboring Oxford.
Both teams had been in challenging games lately and showed their toughness throughout Monday’s match-up. Oxford fought back late in the game, but Greene stood their ground to pick up the 9-5 win.
Greene got on the board with four runs in the first as Claire Flanagan reached on an infield single and moved to second on a bunt by Cali Knapp.
Flanagan reached third on a passed ball and would come in to score on a wild pitch. Knapp moved on more wild pitches and scored after tagging up on a ground out play. Two runs would follow as Dakota LeBlanc smacked a double to center field with two outs, stole third base, and scored on a wild pitch. Audra Doll drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another to make it 4-0 Greene.
Greene added three more runs in the fourth inning as Doll drew another walk, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. She came into score on Kenzie Button’s groundout RBI. Ahraya Whitt kept the inning going with a two-out single and Flanagan followed with her second of three hits on the day and Whitt came into score. Knapp continued with a single to center to bring in Flanagan to make it 7-0 Trojans.
Oxford answered back with one run in the top of the fifth inning as Cora Hodge drew a walk to lead-off. Raya Warner moved her to second on a hardball that was unplayable to shortstop. Colette Kappauf moved the runners with a single to right field before Hodge came into score during Abi Stone’s at-bat.
Greene added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Alexis Cloyd hit a pinch-hit single to right field and moved to second on an error. She came in to score on a groundout RBI by Mattie Harrington.
The Blackhawks fired up in the sixth with two more runs. Ava Benjamin led-off the inning with a hard hit ball in the infield and came in to score on Lily Marshman’s unplayable ball at shortstop. Marshman scored on a groundout RBI by Cora Hodge. The Greene defense was able to get out of the inning and the offense plated one final run.
In their final at-bats, Oxford continued to show strength in the latter innings as Aubrey Rickard led-off with a single to right field before getting out at second base. Margaret Rovente reached on an error and advanced on a single by Ava Benjamin. Rovente came home on Lily Marshman’s RBI double to right field and Benjamin came in to score on a groundout RBI from Emmalee Reiss. Greene’s Tatianna Wells struck out the final batter to end the game.
Wells allowed five runs on five hits, walked three, and struck out nine batters in the win. Marshman allowed nine runs on nine hits, walked four, and struck out seven batters in the loss.
Greene (2-4) heads to Harpursville on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. while Oxford hosts Deposit-Hancock at the same time.
