AFTON — Horton Hardware, located at 198 Main Street, has been in business for 118 years. But now, with heavy hearts, owners and brothers Steve and Alan Gaydorus announced the store is closing and mailed letters to all of their customers.

“Two years ago we started looking for a buyer but no one came around,” Alan said. “This is the thing, it’s sad, it’s been our lives, but it’s time to retire.”

“I’ve been involved with the store for the last 45 years and we’ve had a lot of great customers through the years and wonderful people in the community,” he said. “I’ll really miss them.”

“We enjoyed getting to know the community and the area, it has really been a great run,” said Alan.

He said business can be tough with the way times have changed with more businesses online, and Amazon purchases and deliveries; you have to be realistic.

Alan explained, it’s time for their retirement. He said they’ve been preparing for the retirement sale and today, April 25, they’ll open the doors to begin the largest sale ever at Horton Hardware.

“The first day of our retirement sale is today and we have “no purchase necessary” prize giveaways totaling $2,500, including a big screen TV, sound bar, and more, “ said Alan. “We’ll be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday. We’re closed on Sunday.”

Everything will be discounted, all merchandise, all departments, rental equipment, displays, fixtures, etc. The sale will continue for a few weeks until everything is sold.

Alan sincerely invited everyone to stop by their retirement sale and take advantage of the clearance prices plus he noted in the letter to their customers, they would appreciate the opportunity to thank everyone in person.

Area resident Theresa Munno said, “Horton Hardware has been a constant in Afton, for as long as I can remember. Your dedication to our community over the years is commendable.”

“You will be truly missed in this community,” she added. “Wishing you a well deserved and happy retirement, cheers.”

Linda Cook DeVona once created a collage sketch of Horton Hardware for the owners, around the time the store was remodeled and enlarged. She visited a few years ago at Christmas and enjoyed meeting Santa.

DeVona said, “I really felt like I met the real Santa at Horton’s, it’s a nice memory.”

“The clerks were always personable,” she added. “I’ll miss chatting with Dawn about what antics her horse Magic was up to.”

Many loyal customers and friends took to social media, leaving supportive and encouraging comments.
On April 28, Horton Hardware marks its 118 years of business. Clark and Harry Horton were the first owners and then Steve and Alan's father, Charlie, purchased the store in 1959. The Gaydorus brothers worked in the store for decades until they bought it in 1996.
