NORWICH — The City of Norwich Police Department (NPD) recently promoted Officer Corey Burnett to the position of detective.

"We have great officers at Norwich PD, and it was not an easy choice. Officer Burnett has a distinguished record and a great work ethic. He makes himself available for overtime and is always volunteering to take part in community education programs," said NPD Chief Reuben Roach.

Burnett, along with two other NPD detectives, will be working on the department's drug task force as well as handling felony-level crimes.

Roach said he worked closely with City of Norwich Mayor Brian Doliver in 2023 to plan out and form the task force, with the goal of reducing substance use and overdose rates in the city.

In November 2023, Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19) announced $1.5 million in Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants would be distributed to Southern Tier police departments, with the NPD to receive $125,000 over three years. That grant allowed the department to promote Burnett and get an extra set of hands on the drug task force.
