NORWICH - It was a crosstown softball match-up between Sherburne-Earlville and Norwich on a sunny Friday afternoon. S-E was working on a week's rest and Norwich was making up rescheduled games, so both teams were very much ready to play. S-E rolled through with a 18-1 victory over the Purple Tornado through five innings played.
S-E didn't waste any time with plating three runs in the first inning. Jeanine Chamberlain reached base on an error with one out and Emily Lawrence followed with a single before Haleigh Fisher drove in Chamberlain. Chesnee Miller followed with a single to load the bases for Savanna Born, who walked to bring in a run. Emilee Bennett also walked to bring in another run. Norwich's Caitlin Wetterhahn struck out the next two batters to end the half of the inning.
Haleigh Fisher worked her magic on the mound for S-E and the offense went back to work with a five-run fourth inning and had 10 runs in the final at-bats in the fifth. Norwich broke up Fisher's no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth inning as Ava-Rose Cirigliano beat out the throw on a bunt play. She then went on to steal second and third and scored on a RBI double by Wetterhahn.
S-E fired up in the top of the fifth inning, quickly loading the bases on two errors and a single before one run came in on a passed ball and two came in on Bennett's two-run single. Reagan Krueger followed with an RBI single and other runs were scored on errors and another passed ball. Both Bennett and Fisher went 3-for-4 at the plate and Bennett drove in a team-high seven runs.
Fisher allowed the one run on two hits and struck out 11 batters in the win while Wetterhahn struck out five batters in the loss.
S-E improves to 5-1 on the season and heads to Waterville this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Norwich (0-10) heads to Harpursville this afternoon at the same time.
