Oxford baseball holds on vs Delhi
DELHI – The Oxford Blackhawks baseball team traveled to Delhi on Monday afternoon for a MAC league match-up. Both teams had been struggling in recent games, so it seemed like a great time to square off. It definitely was a battle for both teams who put up total of 26 runs scored. Oxford held on to a 15-11 victory, marking their third win of the season.
Oxford got on the board first to start the game with a five-run first and a nine-run second to have complete control. Conner Dunagan singled to lead-off the top of the first inning, stole second, and scored on an error during Landen Olinski’s at-bat. Blake Barrows drove in a run on a fielder’s choice after Nic Dodzweit singled to left field. Brent Hamilton also grounded into a fielder’s choice, which scored two runs off an error to put Hamilton at second base. Hamilton scored on an error to make it 5-0 Oxford.
The nine-run second inning was brought on by a lead-off double by Dunagan and Degan Endress followed with a single. Dunagan tagged up to score on a popout and Dodzweit provided his second hit of the game with a single to center field to have two runners in scoring position for Barrows. Barrows drove in another run on a single to left field. Kyle Benjamin grounded into a fielder’s choice, but a run came home. Benjamin stole second and Barrows scored on a wild pitch. Benjamin scored on Hamilton’s RBI single. The inning continued with two outs. Donovan Rickard singled, Dunagan reached on a catcher’s interference before two errors plated four runs.
Delhi answered back in the third, added two runs in the fifth, and six runs in the sixth inning. Oxford scored its final run in the seventh as Degan Endress scored on a wild pitch. Everyone in the Oxford lineup all hit one hit each with Dunagan and Dodzweit have a multiple hit game. Dunagan went 3-for-4 and Dodzweit went 2-for-5.
Dodzweit started on the mound for the Blackhawks, going four and two-thirds, allowing five runs on two hits, walked five, and struck out 10 batters. Dunagan earned the win in relief as he allowed six runs, two earned, on three hits, six walks, and struck out three batters in two and a third innings pitched.
Oxford (3-7) heads to Sidney this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
