Chenango County Area Agency on Aging celebrated in West Park

NORWICH — Tuesday, the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging celebrated their 50 years of serving the community. Hundreds of people took to West Park to enjoy the beautiful weather, activities, food, music, camaraderie.

Activities included trivia, guessing jars, and paint and plant. Chenango County Historian Henry Drexler provided “A Walk Down Memory Lane” in the Guernsey Memorial Library.

Many seats and tents were filled with inquisitive community members; seniors and youth.

“We are super excited to honor some additional people here today that provide service to our county,” said Director of Chenango County Area Agency on Aging Heather Felter.

She read a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging office.

She said the agency adoption was moved on October 9, 1973 by a board resolution. The Chenango County Board of Supervisors endorsed and supported the application by the County of Chenango to the New York State Office for the Aging for the establishment of a Chenango County Office for Aging.

Felter said some of the purposes set up 50 years ago included planning environmental and personal services to meet the needs of the county's elderly population, identifying the major problems affecting the elderly, conducting research in finding the needs of the elderly community, reviewing programs and more.

On January 14, 1974, Mr. William Fiorello, known as Bill, was appointed as the Administrative Officer of the Chenango County Area Agency on Aging and on May 13, 1974, the Board of Supervisors appointed an advisory council to the agency.
