NEW BERLIN – The Village of New Berlin is finalizing details of a Memorial Day event that organizers say will be an honorable but celebratory tribute to fallen veterans.
“We’re taking things to ‘the next level’ this year with more parade entries, more food options,
great music, and even a dance performance,” said New Berlin Mayor Peter Lennon.
Monday’s event begins with a parade set to step off at 9:30 a.m. at Hyde Park. Nearly two dozen entries comprise this year’s parade lineup which includes local veterans, active service members, and first responders. Local clubs and organizations will also be represented, along with the Unadilla Valley Central School marching band and performances from the Otsego School of Dance.
The local Legion Auxiliary and the Daughters of the American Revolution will pass out free poppies and hand-held flags during the parade.
The parade will culminate in an honors ceremony to be held in front of Milford Academy. Village officials are joining forces with American Legion Post 348 to conduct this year’s ceremony which features Master of Ceremonies Haywood (Woody) Edwards and special guest speaker John Sheldon, sergeant major (ret.) of the U.S. Army.
The ceremony will also feature performances by the Unadilla Valley School Choir, “Phantom of the Opera” performer Jeff Keller, and The Village Voices ensemble.
“This year, our participants will include both veterans and active duty military service members
representing the various branches of service,” Lennon said. “It’s a chance to learn what military life is like today.”
The Columbus Public House will organize a chicken barbecue in front of Milford Academy following the ceremony while the American Legion will offer a free post-ceremony cookout on Academy Street. Free treats will be on hand, courtesy of Chobani, along with lemonade and bottled water donated by Curtis Lumber.
