Local Athletes make their mark on final day of track State qualifiers

UNION-ENDICOTT – Local teams were back in action on Thursday for the final day of the track
and field State Qualifiers. Corning walked away with the girls’ win as Ithaca won for the boys’
meet. Unadilla Valley girls’ tied for sixth with Binghamton as Bainbridge-Guilford tied for 13th
and Oxford/Greene tied for 17th place. The Norwich boys’ took fifth as Oxford/Greene came in
eighth and B-G in 26th. All local Chenango County teams are sending multiple athletes to
States next week in Cicero.
B-G:
The Bainbridge-Guilford girls’ kicked off the final day of the State qualifiers with a third place
finish in the 4x800 team relay. The team of Maddie Ingham, Laila Williams, Lalaenia Baldwin,
and Ethne Degan ran 10:23.02. Degan went on to race to a third place finish in the 1500 meter
run with a time of 4:49.04.
Emily Sprow finished 10th in the girls’ long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 11 inches and tied for
13th place in the high jump (4-8).
Collin Dicks was the lone competitor for the B-G boys’ for the final day. He came in eighth in the
200 meter dash with a time of 23.60 seconds. He also took fourth in the long jump with a jump
of 20 feet, seven inches.
NORWICH:
The Norwich Purple Tornado track and field team is sending several gentlemen to States.
Congratulations to Richard Fuller, who won the 400 meter dash from day one, Lucas Craddock,
who will go for the triple, long, and high jumps, and the boys 4x100 team consisting of Fuller,
Spencer Root, Gabe Decker, and Cameron Carnachan.
The 4x100 team took third on the final day of State Qualifiers with a time of 43.95 seconds.
Craddock won the boys’ high jump with a top jump of six feet, seven inches.
Norwich also had a girls’ 4x800 team compete as well as Emma Urgo in the high jump and
Olivia Palmer and Lara Tefft in the discus throw. A team of Annie Boland, Kyra Brunick-Davis,
McKenzie Hagenbuch, and Emilia Pepe finished 11th in the 4x800.
Urgo tied with nine girls in the high jump for 12th place with a jump of four feet, eight inches.
Palmer came in seventh in the discus throw with a throw of 96 feet, two inches as Tefft finished
10th (93-1).
OXFORD/GREENE:
After day one, the Oxford/Greene track and field team already had a few athletes qualify for
States, including senior thrower Lyla Biefeldt and eighth-grader and runner Gordon Smith. Smith
returned for the final day of State Qualifiers, where he finished eighth in the 1600 meter run with
a time of 4:33.97. He also helped the 4x800 team finish eighth with Aidan Amin, Aiden Ives, and Eddie
Golden.
Sophomore Anthony Bourn finished 13th in the boys’ 2000 meter steeplechase with a time of
11:18.56 as teammate Keegan Waltz came in seventh place in the long jump with a jump of 19
feet, three inches. Biefeldt took the victory in the girls’ discus throw with a top throw of 119 feet, five inches.
UNADILLA VALLEY:
The Unadilla Valley Storm girls’ continue to control the boards, much like Bainbridge-Guilford
this season. The 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams both broke and accomplished new school
records in the final day of the State Qualifiers.
A team of Madison Dix, Molly Gorrell, Addison Marnelli, and Natalya Schrag finished fourth in
the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:29.15. Molly, Gracie Gorrell, Dix, Kalie Fernandez-Naughton
finished third in the 4x400 with a time of 4:13.73. Jaiden Schrag, Bella Potter,
Fernandez-Naughton, and Gracie came in fifth in the 4x100 with a time of 51.59 seconds.
Congratulations, ladies.
Jaiden Schrag and Gracie Gorrell are both heading to States for the Lady Storm from day one's
performances with Schrag in the 400 meter hurdles and Gracie in the 400 meter dash. Jaiden
also finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.98 seconds on Thursday.
Kalie Fernandez-Naughton finished 13th in the girls’ long jump with a jump of 14 feet, seven and 3/4 inches. Jacob Prentice tied for 11th place in the boys’ pole vault with a mark of 11 feet.
