PONY League Baseball: Oxford picks up third straight win; defeats Norwich

NORWICH – After a change to the schedule, the Norwich and Oxford PONY League teams squared off on Tuesday night. Both teams were fresh off games played on Monday to prepare them for the local county match-up. Oxford picked up back-to-back wins with a 12-6 victory against Norwich to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Blackhawks have also won three straight games and have won the last four of five.
Oxford went on the board to open up the second inning as Ben Sheridan drove in a run on a groundout. The Blackhawks extended the lead from there in the top of the third with four runs. During that inning, Degan Endress drove in a run on an RBI single, Uri Tracy had an RBI double while Blake Barrows followed with his own RBI single. Eddie Ingraham walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run. Endress, Tracy, and Barrows each had two hits and drove in two runs. Barrows led the team with two stolen bases.
Down 5-0, Norwich answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to one. Gavin Burrell singled with a runner on and one out before James Sprague drove in a run with a RBI single. Noah Eddy followed with an RBI single to center field as Pierce Sherman had a two-out two-run double.
Sprague and Sherman led the team with three hits and two RBIs.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Oxford added two runs in the top of the fifth before a five-run inning in the sixth. Bases loaded walks, an error, and a wild pitch all plated runs for the Blackhawks. Oxford drew a total of 12 walks throughout the game with three to both Eddie Ingraham and Conner Dunagan.
Norwich got two back in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs. Gavin Burrell drew a walk to send in a run before Sprague’s RBI single.
Blake Barrows, Ben Sheridan, and Conner Dunagan all contributed on the mound for Oxford. Barrows went five innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, a walk, and struck out four batters. Sheridan went an inning and a third, allowing just one hit. Dunagan pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits, three walks, and had two strikeouts.
Norwich had Gavin Burrell, Noah Eddy, Bray Lawrence, and Bo Brown on the mound. Bo Brown went the distance through four innings with Burrell working two and Lawrence throwing one inning. Burrell struck out five batters while Brown had three strikeouts and Lawrence struck out two.
Oxford (4-2) hosts Sherburne-Earlville on Friday at 6 p.m. while Norwich (2-2) heads to Whitney Point on Thursday at 6 p.m.
