CHENANGO COUNTY - Local Attorney and North Pitcher native Zachary Wentworth announced on  Thursday, July 18, that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for a newly created Family Court Judge position in Chenango County.
The legislation creating the new position was passed by the state legislature at the end of the 2024 legislative session, and signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
Wentworth, who is currently the Chenango County Attorney, is no stranger to Family Court. Starting his legal career at the James F. Taylor Law Office in Sherburne, he represented parents and children in Chenango, Broome, Otsego, Madison and Cortland County Family Courts.
He then spent a decade working for the Chenango County Public Defender’s Office, spending more than half of that time as the only full-time public defender assigned to family court matters. He has appeared in all aspects of Family Court, from custody, child support and abuse cases to prosecuting cases in the juvenile justice system as County Attorney.
Complementing his legal career, Zach has also been widely involved in our community. He has spent over ten years on the Norwich St. Baldrick’s Organizing Committee, and is a board member on the North Pitcher Cemetery Association. He is a past board member for the not-for-profits Opportunities of Chenango, Inc. and Community Enhancement and Redevelopment Group, Inc. as well as a former member of the Sherburne Rotary Club.
He continues to coach youth sports, which he has done for several years in South Otselic, Sherburne and Norwich. He continues to speak to students across the county about the legal profession.
“I look forward to the opportunity to win the support of the people of Chenango County. Family Court is a crucial part of judicial system, and the decisions made there have lasting impacts on our society as a whole,” said Wentworth. “My legal experience, coupled with the experience I have gained volunteering in the community’ makes me the best candidate for this new position in the Chenango County Family Court.”
Graduating from Otselic Valley Central School, Wentworth went on to received his bachelors of Science from SUNY ESF in Syracuse before obtaining his Juris Doctor from Vermont Law School.
He now raises his two children Riley and Carter, with his wife Juliette in his childhood home in North Pitcher.
Due to the timing of the new law, the nomination to the be on the ballot will be made by the Chenango Republican County Committee, rather than through a traditional primary election.
Once selected, that individual would campaign for election at this year’s November general election.
