OXFORD - After meeting in early July, the Oxford and Norwich PONY League teams faced off for a second time on Thursday night. Oxford swept the two-game series with a 14-4 victory. It was Oxford's fifth straight win and sixth win on the season.
Norwich tried to get on the board in the first inning as Bo Brown led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout. Unfortunately, Brown was caught stealing home on a nice play made by catcher Eddie Ingraham and pitcher Blake Barrows.
Meanwhile, Oxford scored four runs in the bottom of the first and continued on from there, including a five-run third inning. After being down 5-0, Norwich added three in the top of the third inning. The Purple Tornado was able to score one run in the top of the fifth inning to prevent Oxford from taking the game then. However, Oxford did score the final run in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 10-run victory.
For Oxford, Blake Barrows led the team with three hits and four RBIs. Uri Tracy had two hits and drove in a run while Adam Beckwith drove in three runs. Eddie Ingraham had two RBIs while Nic Dodzweit and Degan Endress both drove in a run.
Norwich's Brooks Boland led the team with three RBIs while James Sprague drove in one run. Boland, Bo Brown, Blayne Sutton, and Thomas O'Connor each contributed with a hit. Like Oxford did in the first inning, the Norwich defense also made a play at the plate to get Nic Dodzweit out trying to steal home with a great tag made by catcher Pierce Sherman in the bottom of the fourth inning. Dodzweit would bring in the game-ending run on a double to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Blake Barrows started on the mound for Oxford, lasting three and two-thirds, allowing four runs on four hits, five walks, and struck out three batters. Nic Dodzweit finished the game and struck out two batters through two-thirds of an inning.
Norwich's Blayne Sutton got the start and went two and two-thirds, allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on six hits, four walks, and three strikeouts. Brooks Boland pitched in relief, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, and struck out three batters through one and two-thirds.
Oxford (6-2) heads to Edmeston on Tuesday at 6 p.m. while Norwich (3-3) hosts Whitney Point this evening (Friday) at 6 p.m.
