NORWICH — Achieve's Envisions Day Habilitation Center, located at 96-100 East Main Street in Norwich, will be hosting a car wash fundraiser in the CWS parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, in support of the Self Advocacy of Achieve group.

Achieve Day Habilitation Support Specialist Sue Benjamin said the Self Advocacy group aims to "empower Self Advocates that take part in Achieve's programming to learn about their rights and  responsibilities, identify rights they wish to advocate for, and band together with others in New York State to speak up for those rights."

The individuals served by Achieve will be washing cars for $5 per car, with the help of Achieve staff as needed. Funds raised will go to supporting the Self Advocacy group, allowing them to attend educational seminars on the topic of self advocacy.

"Self advocacy is a group that explores a right that they want to learn about each month, like budgeting, living on your own, healthy living. They also learn about and promote advocating for themselves and their rights," Benjamin explained. "They are raising money to go to educational seminars to better understand what self advocacy is and does, and to get together with other members from other ARC’S in new York and across the country."

"These individuals are very excited to do the car wash and are really looking forward to being able to attend seminars and get out into the community and let everyone know what they are about, and to let the world know that they can do anything that anyone else can do," she added. "They want to be involved and be seen."

Achieve is a nonprofit organization that provides skill advancement, inclusion, independence, and socialization to more than 2,200 individuals with developmental and other disabilities in Broome, Chenango, and Tioga Counties.
