OXFORD — The Oxford Memorial Library, located at 8 Fort Hill Park in Oxford, is celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month with a bookmark making contest.

The America Library Association (ALA) partnered with the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) to start Library Card Sign-Up Month in 1987, in response to then Secretary of Education William Bennett, who said, “Let’s have a campaign … Every child should obtain a library card and use it.”

Now, each September, libraries across the nation celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month and encourage individuals of all ages to sign up for a library card.

The Oxford Memorial Library is doing so this year by hosting a contest for Oxford Library card holders to design their own bookmark. The contest is broken into three age groups: kids ages 0 to 11, youth ages 12 to 17, and adults ages 18 and older. One winner will be selected from each category, as well as a "People's Choice" winner.

"There will be a winner from each age category, then [we're] going to make up copies and laminate them, and they’ll be here for patrons to take," said Oxford Memorial Library Director Nancy Wilcox.

Forms for the contest are available at the Oxford Memorial Library circulation desk, at OxfordMemorialLibrary.org, and on the Oxford Memorial Library and Youth Services Facebook page.

Templates are provided on the form, or entrants can use their own media. Bookmarks must be 8 by 2 inches, and all artwork must be created by the entrant – no AI-generated images are allowed.

Wilcox said participants are welcome to use whatever media they'd like, such as paints, markers, crayons, colored pencils, and more. Submissions are limited to one per person, and designs will be disqualified if they contain hateful messages.

To submit a bookmark, drop off the completed bookmark and entry form at the Oxford Memorial Library circulation desk any time before September 30. Participants should also include their full name, the category they are submitting for, their library card number, and phone number. Participants under the age of 18 must include a parent or guardian's information with their submission.

Winners will be announced on October 4.

All participants must have an Oxford Memorial Library card, which can be easily obtained at the circulation desk by filling out a short form.

"They just need to come in with some form of ID and fill out the little registration form we have. We put all the information into our database and it only takes a few minutes, and then they’re good to go," said Wilcox. "The neat thing about member libraries in the Four County Library System, for example, your Guernsey [Memorial Library] card is good at Oxford and Greene and any other library in the Four County System. You only need the one card."

Other ways to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month include visiting a local library, helping to spread the word about Library Card Sign-Up Month and encouraging friends and family to sign up for a library card, and trying something new at the library.

The ALA I Love Libraries challenge is encouraging individuals to try out what their local libraries have to offer. For the month of September, individuals can visit a library and try something new, whether that's signing up for their first library card, exploring a new service, reading a new book genre, participating in a library craft event, and more.

Everyone who tries something new at their local library and shares it will be entered in a random drawing. One first-place winner will receive a $150 Visa gift card, and three second-place winners will their choice of a poster from the ALA store.

Rules and an entry form can be found at ILoveLibraries.org/try-something-new-at-your-library-promotion.

Why not try something new at the Oxford Memorial Library? The library offers programming for families, youth, teens, and adults; a puzzle exchange; books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines available to check out; computers, free wifi, a self-service copy machine, and faxing services; a Microfilm reader available to use with the Oxford Times microfilms, which date from 1813 to 1978; volunteering opportunities, and more.
