Greene's long playoff streak likely comes to an end

GREENE – Chenango County’s longest run of consecutive football playoff appearances likely came to an end on Friday.
In a must-win situation against visiting Unatego/Franklin/G-MU/Unadilla Valley, Greene lost a back-and-forth clash 18-14 on Friday night.
The lead changed hands three times in the second half, and a clutch U/F/GMU/UV first down in the fourth quarter sealed the visitors’ win.
“Honestly, in many ways, we played our most complete game of the year,” said Greene head coach Dave Gorton, whose club has made the playoffs every season nine straight years (excluding the shortened 2020 COVID season). “We were able to do a lot of things we wanted to do. I would say, up front, we were giving up 30-plus pounds per man. At the end of the second half, their size just hurt us.”
Greene had the visiting club pinned on their side of the field and forced a fourth-and-six situation with two minutes to play in the game.
U/F/GMU/UV established a physical, chain-moving attack in the second half that was almost exclusively through the running game.
But on this pivotal play, a play-action pass was called. The change-up fooled the Greene defense leading to a 15-yard first-down completion. From there, the visitors ran out the clock.
“Our guys got caught staring into the backfield (on that last play by U/F/G-MU/UV),” Gorton said. “I think our guys assumed (U/F/G-MU/UV) would run the ball.”
Greene (0-3, 2-3) used the passing game to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Micheal Slater threw the first of two TD passes to Micah Lafave connecting on a 49-yard strike.
U/F/G-MU/UV dominated time of possession in the second half, and marched 70 yards for the score following the second half kickoff. The drive consumed seven minutes and 44 seconds of time for the 12-8 lead.
The Greene response to that touchdown didn’t take long.
Following a first-down pass connection from Slater to Laz Ludolph, Slater scrambled to his right on the next play and threw back to the left to a wide-open Lafave for the 24-yard TD.
U/F/G-MU/UV again embarked on a long, time-consuming drive, and took the lead for good on a short TD run.
“We have shown great improvement, even though we didn’t get the result we wanted,” Gorton said. “We had our best week of practice, the kids were focused, and did a good job.”
Perhaps a few more bounces of the oblong ball going the Trojans’ way may have changed the outcome.  Gorton estimated U/F/G-MU/UV had double-digit fumbles in the game.
“It was amazing how many fumbles we forced,” he said. “We didn’t get the bounces to recover. The ball was on the ground at least 10 times, and we only recovered two.”
Greene hosts Trumansburg Friday, October 18.
