OXFORD – After Oxford and Delhi met for the MAC boys championship title last weekend, the two teams met up for a rematch in the first round of the Section IV, Class C tournament, this time at Oxford High School. The two teams battled back-and-forth as expected with Delhi being a strong defensive team. The game was decided in overtime again with Oxford coming away with the 2-1 victory to advance to the next round.
The game was scoreless after the first half with Oxford having the most shots on goal, but having no luck against a tough Bulldogs defense. However, Oxford finally netted one five minutes into the second half as Sam Hendricks earned a direct kick near the goalkeeper box and was able to capitalize on the advantage. Delhi tied the game five minutes later. Oxford had more opportunities, but couldn’t finish and the game went into a 15 minute overtime.
The Blackhawks have seen many overtime games go their way this season and sure enough the spark stayed alive as Jared Sheridan found brother Ben Sheridan and Ben crashed the net to win it for the home crowd. Ben, who spends a lot of time on defense, was trusted up front and scored his first varsity goal. Jared Sheridan was strong all game long with being first to the ball on opponent goal kicks.
