Spartans pull away for win over Purple Tornado
ENDWELL – The machine that is the Maine-Endwell’s football team had a bit of breakdown in the first half of Saturday’s home game against Norwich.
After trading touchdowns in a wild back-and-forth second quarter, the Spartans took command in the third quarter en route to a 42-14 victory over the Purple Tornado.
M-E, a Class B state finalist last year and the number one ranked Class B team in the state, scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to break away from a 21-14 halftime lead.
“I thought, being down seven at the half to the number one team in the state, was a good position going into the second half,” said Norwich coach Mike Chrystie. “I felt we executed well in the first half, and it built our confidence.”
Norwich (5-3), though suffered game-ending injuries to several key players – most of whom played full-time on both sides of the ball. Those absences proved critical as M-E imposed its will.
Preston Ocker capped a 10-play scoring drive to start the second half scoring on a one-yard run. Following a Norwich punt, Tyler Mathews capped a three-TD day, dashing 48 yards for a score.
After Norwich turned it over on the next possession, Jaden Branch capped the day’s scoring rushing it in from three yards out.
“The last couple years, the games against (Maine-Endwell) have been one-sided,” Chrystie said. “Looking at the game film, when we were healthy, it was a back-and-forth game. Once certain guys went down (with an injury), it became much more difficult to hang with them.”
The wild second quarter saw back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Following M-E’s first score early in the second quarter, Norwich’s Hunter Pierce returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards to paydirt.
The Spartans answered right back when Mathews took the kickoff 79 yards back for a touchdown.
Norwich matched the Spartans again with its best drive of the game.
Steven Dowdall’s 10-yard TD pass to Zack Parker, followed by the successful two-point conversion knotted the game at 14-14.
M-E moved quickly late in the game scoring the go-ahead score 37 seconds before halftime.
“That kickoff return (by Mathews) was disheartening,” Chrystie said. “Maine-Endwell has good quality kids in their program. That’s why they are number one year in and year out. That’s what we are striving to get to.”
Norwich wraps up the regular season Friday at home against Chenango Valley. Norwich will then play the loser of Owego and Maine-Endwell (who meet next week) in the Section IV Class B semi-finals in two weeks.
