NORWICH — Join instructors from the Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy for the "Strong Women" self defense class at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 20 at the Norwich High School Cafeteria.

The class is free to attend for women and girls over the age of 14 who reside in Chenango County, thanks to grant funding provided by the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of South Central New York, which was secured by The Place.

Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. To sign up, contact The Place at 607-336-9696.

Strong Women is an introductory-level course that is suitable for women of all fitness types, and teaches practical techniques women can use to protect themselves if they are ever in an assault situation.

Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy Owner Wyatt Green said the grappling style of jiu jitsu can be especially useful in self defense.

"These are things you can do in close range when somebody is grabbing you," said Green. "I think most women who are dealing with an assault are going to be dealing with a situation where somebody is grabbing them and trying to do something. So that brings it to jiu jitsu right away, and of course, that’s a threat that a lot of women unfortunately may have to deal with at some point in their life."

Plus, he said taking self defense classes are a great way to boost confidence as well, which can make an individual less of an easy target for assault.

"When you do the drills that we do and the sort of training that we do, it gets you much more comfortable than you would be ordinarily with physicality, close contact with somebody. You become a lot more comfortable with it, because that’s always what we’re doing, and I think that by itself, it makes you much less of an easy target," he explained. "Mentally, too, it's going to create confidence which, again, is going to make you less of a target. I think that’s one of the most effective things you can do in the first place to avoid these things."

The Place Executive Director Sharon Vesely said the grant from the Community Foundation allows them to offer Strong Women every third Friday of the month for a full year. Individuals are encouraged to participate in more than one class, as repeated practice of the techniques will only make them more effective.

"The more practice women get with these techniques, or comfortable, the more likely they are to use them if they’re in a certain situation, which is one of the reasons we extended the class for an entire year," she said. "So the classes are once a month, but you can come for just a one time thing, or come every month depending on your schedule. But the more the participants attend, the more confident they’re going to be and well-versed in the techniques."

"It’s like getting ready to go for a job interview, or be on stage for a performance. You kind of get amped up, and get into a certain mindset, and this is about that. It’s about getting to a different mindset and knowing you have the skills to do what you need to do," she added. "It’s about building up self esteem and confidence, and once women have that they’re able to defend themselves."
