BAINBRIDGE – After both teams started the season off strong, the Greene Trojans and the Bainbridge-Guilford Bobcats girls basketball teams met for a local MAC league match-up.
Both teams applied early defensive pressure, but Greene emerged with a 43-33 victory, demonstrating resilience under pressure.
The first half was slow for both teams as they put their defensive skills to the test. For Greene, they got into foul troubles throughout the game, which sent B-G to the free-throw line 14 times, where the Bobcats had 11 successful attempts. B-G upped their defensive pressure to match Greene’s intensity before halftime, holding the Trojans to five quarter points. However, Greene never lost the lead once and led 18-14 at the break.
Greene picked up the pace offensively to start the third quarter. They started on a 5-0 run to open the game and then started the second half the same way. Much efforts in the first half belonged to Abby Yahner with six points alone in the first eight minutes and she also had a strong defensive stance, along with Josie Dutcher and Cali Knapp. Claire Flanagan got hot in the third quarter with nine points with three-threes.
Flanagan led the Trojans with 14 points as Abby Yahner had nine points.
B-G tried getting closer with Emma Kinter and Peyton Umbra laying down three-pointers themselves, but otherwise, key players were held to free-throw attempts. Kinter led the Bobcats with nine points as Umbra, Jayslin Henderson, Tori Suda, and Marissa Mayo all contributed with six points.
Greene (5-1) will play in the Unadilla Valley holiday tournament over the weekend of December 27 and 28, where they face Charlotte Valley in the opening round. B-G (4-2) hosts the Kazalski tournament the same weekend, where they’ll host GMU, Roxbury, and Harpursville.
