Informational meeting Saturday for prospective 'Zonta' club

CHENANGO COUNTY — There will be an organizational meeting on Saturday, January 18 from 10 a.m. to noon at Guernsey Memorial Library for a prospective Zonta club for the Chenango County area.
Zonta is an international organization that aims to support women and girls through service projects, with a total of 1,133 clubs in 62 countries.
According to ZontaUSA.org, some of the topics their clubs address includes equal pay, violence against women, child marriages, period poverty, reproductive rights, maternal mortality, domestic violence, human trafficking, women in government, and more.
Local philanthropist Kisten Giglio is leading the charge in forming a Zonta club in Chenango County. She said Zonta Lieutenant Governor Iraina Gerchman and Zonta District Club Creator Liz Tesiero will be attending the meeting to share more information about Zonta and their mission.
"They’re going to provide us with additional information, how we go about club formation, and then Liz and Iraina will be key in assisting us in the next few months in seeking out those service projects and seeking out members, looking where some of the opportunities are in Chenango County," Giglio explained.
She said they're looking for at least 12 to 15 members to form an official club, which will work to identify and address needs of women and girls in the Chenango County community.
"The really nice thing about Zonta is the members decide what the focus is. So hopefully by being throughout the county, we’ll be able to impact more than just Norwich," said Giglio. "Our goal would then be to have our own club and become a functioning club here in the county."
Men and women are welcome to join the club, and Giglio encourages anyone interested to attend Saturday's meeting to learn more about Zonta and how they can have a positive impact on the community.
