NORWICH - The Chenango County 4-H is collaborating with Chenango County Youth Bureau for its fourth year to provide outdoor opportunities for youth, ages eight and up.
The program will offer a range of outdoor adventures in different locations throughout winter.
Kicking off the joint venture will be a cross-country ski outing, designed to teach youth techniques and tips while gliding across snow covered trails. The program will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, January 25, at Friends of Rogers, located at 2721 NY-80, Sherburne, NY.
"The cross-country ski program will be one of many this season and the Youth Bureau funding allows us to offer these free programs and equipment rental at Friends of Rogers," said Cornell Cooperative Exchange (CCE) Natural Resource Educator and 4-H Leader Erica Clark.
Clark said the youth will have the opportunity to test out cross-country skis and learn a few basic skills on how to move through the snow, through a mix of games and going out on the trail.
To register for the cross-country program go to https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/Crosscountryski2025_208.
"Youth should dress in layers," Clark continued. " It's important to wear snowpants, hats and gloves, but also be prepared to take off an upper layer as one warms up during the activity."
She said she'll be joined by CCE Grow Cook Serve Program Coordinator Alexis Woodcock, and mentioned in case of a large youth group, an additional volunteer would be added.
"We've enjoyed offering this in the past and have had anywhere from 10 to 12 youth participate," said Clark. "With the many scheduled weekend programs, if we need to cancel, we most likely won't be able to reschedule."
She noted there will be a cap on how many participants can join and once registered, they will send out program information, details, and reminders with dates, time, location and what to bring.
Additional winter programs scheduled in February will be a Youth Snowshoe Adventure, February 19, at Cook Park in Greene and a 4-H Ice Fishing Workshop, February 21, location is to be determined.
