Norwich softball falls short to Oneonta
NORWICH – On Monday, the Norwich Purple Tornado softball team hosted rival Oneonta. Both teams battled through seven innings in a high-scoring affair, which Oneonta secured the 14-10 victory with Norwich attempting a late comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Oneonta got on the board in the first, off to a 2-0 start. The Yellow Jackets added four more runs before Norwich answered back.
Norwich got within two runs with a four-run fourth inning. Ava Cirigiliano singled to right to lead-off the inning before Kerragan Reid is hit by the pitch and Caitlin Wetterhahn drives in both on a double to center.
Shaelyn Rice drove in Wetterhahn on a one-out single to center and Loralee Brown, who drew a walk, scored on an error to make it 6-4.
Oneonta scored three more runs in the fifth but so did Norwich to keep it a two-run game. Two straight walks and stolen bases put runners in scoring position for Reid, who drove in both on an infield single. Ava Cirigliano scored during Wetterhahn’s pop out at-bat while a run came home on an error.
