Norwich PONY splits doubleheader with Unatego
NORWICH – In the midst of the conclusion of Norwich’s Gus Macker basketball tournament, the Norwich PONY league team hosted unbeaten Unatego for a doubleheader to end the regular summer season. Norwich handed the Spartans their first loss and split the doubleheader.
Game 1: Norwich 3 - Unatego 2
Norwich hands Unatego their first loss of the summer in a tight 3-2 win sealed by a groundout RBI by Pierce Sherman. After a scoreless first inning, both teams got on the board with one run in the second. Sherman scored on a tag up on a sac fly by Brooks Boland. Norwich’s Joey Parker broke the tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the third before Pierce Sherman made it 3-1. Unatego tried to make a full comeback in the top of the fifth, but was held to one run. Blayne Sutton went 4.1 for Norwich, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, three walks, and struck out four batters. Bo Brown got the final two outs in the fifth inning.
Game 2: Unatego 4- Norwich 3
With the game tied up at three, Unatego scored one run in the bottom of the fifth to walk it off. Both teams got on the board in the second with Unatego’s defense turning a double play, but Pierce Sherman scored on a steal of home before the play. After a scoreless third, both teams scored two in the fourth inning. Blayne Sutton drew a walk to lead-off the inning and was the force out as Sherman reached on a fielder’s choice. Brayden Lawrence singled to put runners on the corners for Luke Waters. Sherman stole home before Waters doubled to drive in a run. Unatego retied the game up in the bottom half of the inning before scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth.
Brayden Lawrence led Norwich with two hits as Waters had the RBI double. James Sprague and Jed Turner also had hits in the loss. Bo Brown went four full innings for Norwich on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, three walks, and had one strikeout.
Norwich (6-3) awaits their next game at this time.
