Angelino denounces bill that would give financial relief to lawmakers for not doing their job
NORWICH - Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C-Norwich) is denouncing a bill (A.11090) introduced last week by an Assembly Democrat member from Queens that would let those on the state payroll who are not getting paid because of the late state budget avoid paying for their utility bills. Further, the legislation would exempt late fee penalties and prohibit utility services from being shut off until the state budget is passed. The only state employees currently not being paid are the 213 members of the state Legislature. Angelino says this is outrageous, and they should not be taking care of themselves for failing to do their job.
“Of all the gall! When the state budget is late, the only people who do not get paid are lawmakers, which is how it should be. For some lawmakers to think they should get preferential treatment and be allowed to defer payment on multiple utility bills with no consequence is perhaps the very definition of tone-deafness."
“Albany is controlled by one party, and if they didn’t want to go without pay, they had every opportunity to pass an on-time budget. The irony of all this is it is their failed energy policies that caused utility costs to rise to begin with. Everyday New Yorkers must pay their bills, but the audacity to create a self-serving law protecting themselves takes the cake,” said Angelino.
