Prioritizing women’s health: A community commitment
CHENANGO COUNTY - May is recognized as Women’s Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the unique health needs of women and encourage positive lifestyle choices that support long-term well-being.
National organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health highlight this month as an opportunity to focus on prevention and education.
Here in Chenango County, we are committed to supporting women and families by promoting healthy choices and improving access to care within our community.
Women’s health encompasses more than annual checkups. It includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being across every stage of life. Health experts, including those at the CDC, emphasize that regular preventive care, such as routine screenings, vaccinations, and wellness visits, plays a critical role in detecting potential health concerns early.
In our community, local healthcare providers offer screenings for breast and cervical cancer, along with blood pressure and cholesterol checks, to help women stay on top of their health. Public Health of Chenango County also works to increase access by hosting a mobile mammography van at the County Office Building twice a year.
Community members are encouraged to stay tuned for upcoming dates.
Equally important is mental health. The Office on Women’s Health notes that women often balance multiple responsibilities, from careers to caregiving, which can increase stress and impact emotional well-being. In a close-knit community like ours, it is important to check in on one another, seek support when needed, and take time for self-care.
Healthy lifestyle habits are another cornerstone of women’s health. Organizations such as the American Heart Association consistently highlight the importance of eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, getting adequate sleep, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol use. Chenango County offers many opportunities to support these habits, including local parks, walking trails, and community initiatives.
Public Health of Chenango County also partners with the Planning Department to coordinate the Chenango Outdoor Challenge, which begins on Earth Day and continues throughout the summer, encouraging residents to get outside, stay active, and explore local spaces.
Women’s Health Month is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of access to care and awareness of available services within the community.
Staying informed and utilizing local healthcare resources can help ensure women receive the care they need.
This May, we encourage women across Chenango County to take a proactive step. Schedule a checkup, start a new healthy habit, or have a conversation with a loved one about health. Even small actions can lead to lasting improvements.
Together, we can build a healthier Chenango County supporting women, strengthening families, and improving the well-being of our entire community.
