Local golfers compete at Day 1 of the NYSPHSAA Section IV Medalist tournament; Norwich’s Bennett and Brunick advance

HORSEHEADS— The 2026 NYSPHSAA Section IV Medalist tournament teed off on Wednesday, May 20 from Mark Twain golf course in Horseheads , featuring local Chenango County golfers.

Norwich eighth grader Brevin Bennett leads all of Section IV golfers after shooting a 75 (36/39) or a +3 on Wednesday.

Teammate Matthew Brunick tied for third with a 78 (38/40) or a +6 to also advance to the next round.

The following golfers did an amazing job this season but had missed the cut after the first day.

Oxford’s Bennett Paden shot a 89 (+17) and tied with Greene’s Trent Drew (89,+17) for 28th.

Greene’s Cooper Flanagan shot a 92 (+20) and tied for 46th.

Oxford’s Degan Endress finished with a 96 (+24) and tied for 58th.

Norwich’s Gavin Burrell chipped in a 100 after two scores of a 47 and a 53 to finish tied for 66th as teammate Michael Brunick finished 68th with a 101 (50/51).

Norwich’s Bennett and Brunick tee off around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 22nd for the final round.
