The 64th annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta starts today, to induct four to hall of fame

BAINBRIDGE – Each Memorial Day weekend for the last 64 years a 70-mile endurance race takes place from Coopertown to Bainbridge, the longest one-day flatwater canoe race in the world according to Co-Chairs Michael Kauffman and Christine Smith. The festivities open today, Friday, May 22 with various activities and Sunday, May 24 is Race Day. Fireworks are planned for Saturday and Sunday.

The 70-mile canoe regatta follows the Susquehanna River, starting at Otsego Lake and finishing in General Clinton Park in Bainbridge. The record for fastest time is six hours, 34 minutes, and 34 seconds. Last year, first place clocked at 07:16:06.

“New this year, the race is being live streamed by Betsy Ray from Paddle Daily, that link will also be available on our website,” said Co-Chair Christine Smith. The Regatta will be broadcast live on WCDO FM 101 / AM 1490 and streamed online at www.wcdosports.com which will offer updates from various points along river and includes finish line interviews.

The Regatta kicks off on Friday with Taste of the Regatta at 6 p.m. with local wine and food tastings sponsored by Pine Ridge Grocery. Main Events carnival rides also open at 6 p.m. and continue through Sunday at 10 p.m.

The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce will also recognize Regatta participants with induction to the General Clinton Canoe Regatta Hall of Fame.

“This year the inductees are made up of three individuals known for their longevity success and promotion of canoe paddling, especially the 70-mile endurance race,” said John Harmon from the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce.

The individuals to be inducted this year are, John Cassale, Pete Bauerle, Duke Fisher, and Barb Mulkins. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 23, at the awards tent near the finish line.

The weekend-long affair includes more than just the 70-mile race. There are various events for participants of all ages and skill levels, including: Paddle with a Pro, Pacman Generation Gap Races, Grand Prix Relay Race, Scout Races, and Sprint Races. Aside from canoe racing there will be a volleyball tournament, Catskill Dirt Slinger Garden Tractor Pull, Southern Tier Music Fest Sing Off, and hot air balloon activities on Saturday.

During the 70-mile race on Sunday at the park you'll find activities like a corn hole tournament, music festival, and concluding celebratory fireworks.
