CICERO— The Section III NY State qualifier meet was held on June 3 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School, which featured Sherburne-Earlville sophomore Victor Smith in the 400 meter hurdles.

Smith was the lone competitor for S-E at the meet and worked very hard to get there.

Smith, a transfer from Oriskany in the fall, has impressed his coaches and his teammates to be a key member of the Timberwolves track and field program.

Smith worked alongside teammates and coaches well, including preparing the most with Coach Samantha Karaman.

“Victor is a very diverse athlete, and I was impressed when I also coached him in Indoor on his willingness to try anything we through his way. After losing one of our top 400 hurdlers to another sport this spring, we (the coaches) went on the hunt and scoped out athletes that we thought might be able to fill their place and earn our team some points consistently,” Coach Samatha Karaman said. “ After some prodding, Victor stepped up to the plate. He had the speed but not necessarily the flexibility and was a little awkward going over the hurdles at first. However, his perseverance and hard work paid off week after week, and we continued to work primarily on both his flexibility and hurdle form when going over and then landing each hurdle.”
