“This year we are celebrating our 10th year and have about 200 kids signed up with close to 300 calves, making a Super Show,” said founder of Kids and Calves, Zachary Proskine.
“Kids will come together to learn how to get their animals ready for the show season,” said Proskine.
“Each day is different, with sessions for clipping, leading, washing their animals, and more,” he explained. “Those new to the sessions will go to all sessions, and those with experience can assist the younger ones.”
The weekend show takes in all aspects of showing, enabling each exhibitor to take home a wealth of knowledge and tools required to put that knowledge to work.
He said showmanship is the ability to present and Breed show is based on the animal, adding, “Like a beauty pageant for animals.”
Along with education and fun, the event offers an opportunity to win big prizes.
Proskine said the Master Showman will receive a clipping shoot, which is an aluminum structure to hold animals, Reserve Showman will receive an upright show box, and intermediate will receive a hanging show box.
Proskine’s sister Marty Vidler said her brother has worked for many years in this program and it’s very educational. The kids learn a lot in three days and are well fed.
She said, “This year, it is pretty full; packed with kids and calves.”
On Friday and Saturday, food will be provided by Norwich Magro’s Pizza and Tuller’s Catering. On Sunday, the Future Farmers of America will serve at Chapman Hall.
Over ten years ago, Proskine noticed there was a lack of education for kids to learn how to show, that was when he and his wife decided to create Kids and Calves.
“My wife Amy and I decided to create the program to help kids come into the shows,” he said.
Proskine is grateful to the many sponsors and said, “We could not run this program without the support from our sponsors, thank you.”
