Chenango Sheriff: Drunken ATV rider aimed muzzleloader rifle at group during verbal argument

NORWICH - A Norwich man was arrested Monday, June 22 after police said he pointed a muzzleloader at multiple people during a domestic dispute in the Town of Norwich, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a residence for a disorderly conduct complaint reported to be in progress.

Sheriff Lieutenant Jeffrey Barton said "We received a 911 call of people driving up and down the road on an ATV, with people screaming and yelling.”

After arriving and conducting an investigation, deputies determined that Anthony W. Sawyer, 51, of Norwich, had allegedly been involved in a domestic dispute with family members.

The sheriff’s office investigated and reported Sawyer was intoxicated during a verbal altercation when he allegedly pointed the muzzleloader at multiple victims. Deputies also determined Sawyer had operated an ATV on a public roadway while intoxicated before they arrived.

Sawyer was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for processing. He was later released and will appear in court at a future date.

"We take all of it and gun-related crime very seriously. Anytime a firearm is involved we make sure we investigate fully," said Barton.

Sawyer was charged with four counts of second-degree menacing, first-degree reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and driving while intoxicated.

The charges are accusations, and Sawyer is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
