COLUMBUS — A hay wagon being pulled by a tractor with a dozen riders overturned Saturday evening in the town of Columbus, injuring three people, according to New York State Police. The tractor’s operator suffered serious injuries that resulted in his hand being amputated.

The crash was reported at about 6:32 p.m. on Oct. 10 along Granville Hill Hardscrabble Road.

Donald G. Campbell, 70, of Sherburne, was operating a 2000 Kubota farm tractor pulling a hay wagon carrying 12 people ranging in age from 3 to 62, police reported.

According to investigators, the tractor and wagon began gaining momentum while traveling east down a hill. Campbell attempted to brake, causing the tractor’s wheels to lock.

The tractor and wagon then skidded across the dirt roadway before the tractor jackknifed and the wagon detached.

The tractor rolled onto its side, ejecting Campbell from the driver’s seat and trapping him underneath the vehicle, said police.

The detached hay wagon also rolled onto its side, ejecting a 9-year-old boy and a 47-year-old woman. Both suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The Sherburne and Smyrna fire departments, along with other responders, dispatched emergency crews to help free Campbell, who suffered serious head and arm injuries during the crash.

Sherburne EMS transported Campbell to Wynn Hospital in Utica. Due to the severity of his injuries, doctors were forced to amputate his damaged hand at the hospital, police confirmed.
