GREENE — After taking on some tough opponents to make it to the finals, the Greene Trojans girls’ soccer team gave it one last go in front of their home crowd. The Trojans took on top seeded Trumansburg for the Section IV, Class C championship, where Greene won its first ever sectional title with a 4-1 victory.
“Well, I feel good, but who I really feel the best for are the girls because for the last few years they've been putting in so much hard work and it's just been a goal that was in the back of our mind but we didn't know if we were ever going to be able to achieve it and I'm just thrilled because seeing the girls excited and champions for me it really means everything,” Coach Matt Butler said.
His girls took a early 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes and added on in the second half with all four goals by Hailey Butler from help from Miah Cragle with two assists and Melanie Specht with one assist.
Greene is eager to keep fighting out on the field even against tougher competitors and will take one step at a time. Greene will take on the Section III champion on Saturday, November 7 at Nottingham High School in Syracuse.
“We're just going to go in and do the best we can. We've already surpassed our expectations. Trumansburg was just a formidable opponent. Southern Cayuga, we were really lucky to get through that one. It could have gone either way. We keep facing some really tough competition that's well coached and we're just going to keep going one game at a time and just keep doing the best we can,” Butler said.
Congratulations, Greene.
