S-E erupts in second half

Evening Sun Report

Field Hockey

S-E 5, Hamilton 0
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville scored four goals within a four-minute span in the final 10 minutes of its shutout victory over Hamilton Monday.
Karli Harris scored the first of her two goals deflecting a Courtney Kurtz pass into the cage just five minutes into the second half. The contest remained a one-goal difference until Kurtz started a four-goal barrage at the 9:48 mark and ended at 5:56.
“I was telling the girls that the one-goal lead wasn’t enough,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman in recounting a second-half timeout. “Anything can happen in field hockey, and Hamilton has a fast team. All they needed to do was sneak by one time.”
Samantha Crandall and Amanda Morgan added S-E goals, who improved to 3-1-1 overall. The Marauders host Morrisville-Eaton Wednesday.

Oxford rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit getting goals from Chris Parks and Aric Nisbet. “This is unfortunate because we outplayed them in every aspect of the game, but came up short,” said Oxford coach Tim Paden.

Taylor Duell scored once in each half, and Shawn Hillman, Landon Rasmussen along with David Cerasani added goals for the Vikings (1-4). “We have had a lot of trouble scoring goals and numerous chances,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “Today we distributed the ball well into open space, kept the shots down, and put them in. It sounds simple, but that’s what happened.”

Raffi Perry headed in Andy Hayes’ cornerkick just 6:20 into the game, and Chris Fowler scored off a give-and-go pass from Alec Wilson just 5 1/2 minutes later. Hayes added a goal in the second half. “Our defense is starting to play better with our man coverage,” said UV coach Matt Osborne, whose club also blanked Bainbridge-Guilford 1-0 this past Saturday. “Our confidence is up, but I’d still like us to finish better. We had great opportunities in this game, and just missed the goal.”

SAUQUOIT – After a slow start to the season, the Marauders continued their upswing winning at Sauquoit Valley Monday.
Tied with the Indians at halftime, Nolan Fuller followed in a shot that caromed off the goalie and tucked away the go-ahead goal at the 21-minute mark. “The last few games we have been able to generate more scoring opportunities, and it’s just been a matter of finishing,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “We finished enough today, but there have been other games where we could have easily scored six or seven goals.”
Gabe Fowler and Tom Pudney added tallies for the Marauders (4-2-2), who play at Canastota Wednesday.

SV’s Matt Maczko opened the scoring at the 13-minute mark before Norwich’s Sado Borcilo knotted the game up moments later. Devin Arnold scored the first of his two goals to put the Sabers ahead for good midway through the opening half.
“We were much stronger defensively in the second half and I think we played a little lackadaisical in the first half,” said Norwich coach Hendrik Lowenstein. “They probably should have never scored those two quick goals, and it hurt us.”

Greene allowed just three shots on goal with defender Tara Bub leading the back line of defense. “Delhi really didn’t have many opportunities to score, but we didn’t generate a whole lot either,” summed up Greene coach Randy Smith, whose club hosts Oxford today.
