Finch helps fund Sherburne projects
SHERBURNE – Assemblyman Gary Finch (R-Springport) came to Sherburne on Tuesday night for a “Meet the Candidates” event. While he was in town, he took the opportunity to hand out checks to some Sherburne officials.
A check for $10,000 was given to the Village of Sherburne. Finch was able to award the money to Mayor William Acee as part of a New York State grant. The money will be used to pave a roadway and parking lot adjacent to the Sherburne Municipal building.
“This is money that did not have to come out of the village budget,” Finch said. “So it didn’t cost the Sherburne Village taxpayers anything.” This was a project that had been in the works in Sherburne for a year. “This is an area that gets a lot of traffic. It will serve the fire department, as well as the Village and the Town as well as the street traffic,” Acee said.
The paving project was done in-house, by Highway Superintendent Thomas Turner and his crew. By not going to contract, Acee said, the work was done “quicker, cheaper and better.” Finch agreed, saying that the savings from doing the job in-house equal the amount of the grant.
“Assemblyman Finch has been very helpful obtaining the funds for this project. Otherwise we would have been unable to do it,” Acee said.
Finch also gave $5,000 to the Town of Sherburne for preservation of historical papers and documents. The money will primarily be used for documents in the justice office.
Finch initially gave $1,000 to the Sherburne-Earlville after prom party, but after speaking with Town Assessor Rochelle Harris, he decided to be more generous. He doubled the amount, giving the school $2,000.
