Man discharges weapon before surrendering to police
NORWICH – A Norwich man discharged a 12-gauge shotgun to ward off police as they tried to arrest him Tuesday morning. Robert R, Tracey, 52, Riverview Trailer Park, discharged his weapon while police were searching for him, and he fled from officers. The Norwich City Police apprehended Tracey in a parking lot with weapons drawn.
“I’m grateful it turned out safely. It was a very intense situation and we’re glad we had such a quick response from the sheriff and state police, and from the environmental conservation officers in providing support,” said Chief Joseph Angelino.
Police were originally dispatched to the trailer park after receiving a 911 call for a person who wanted to hurt themselves. While police searched the grounds around the trailer park, Tracey fled to the nearby Kiwanis Park. As officers approached him he fired his 12-gauge shotgun. He then retreated and had a brief standoff with officers before obeying the oral commands to surrender. “It was a dangerous situation and we’re fortunate no one was hurt,” said Assistant Norwich City Police Chief Van Miles.
Tracey was arrested on Christmas Eve for 2nd degree harassment for allegedly touching another person inappropriately. Tracey was charge yesterday with 1st reckless endangerment, 3rd degree criminal possession of a weapon, both class D felonies, resisting arrest and 2nd degree criminal nuisance. He is being held by the City PD pending his arraignment this morning.
