Old location, new flavor

MT. UPTON – Although the outside scenery has not changed all that much, new owners of the Kornerstone Restaurant on Rt. 8 say they’re cooking up something a little different inside.
What was once called The Mint on the corner of Rt. 8 and State Rt. 51 has been remodeled, upgraded and has a new menu to offer. New owner Barb Odell, along with four out of five of her children, opened what they call The Kornerstone restaurant in November of last year.
Odell says everything is homemade including soups, main dishes, and breads. There are daily specials and Thursdays are chicken and biscuit night.
Before opening in November, six months of work was put into getting the restaurant the way the family had imagined it. Previous owners had maintained a renaissance theme and served more costly food, whereas Odell says she wanted to give the restaurant a country feel.
“I wanted to open a restaurant where families could come eat good food and not pay a fortune,” said Odell. “ I also wanted to give it the casual comfortable dining atmosphere so we could get back to the old-fashioned way of things.”
Owning a restaurant is very nostalgic for Odell – she was born and raised in the Mt. Upton area and can remember the original owners of the restaurant.
“There are some sentimental reasons why this was the perfect place to open a restaurant for me,” she said.
Odell says the restaurant is family-run and very family-oriented. She says she treats all of her customers like family and she tries to ensure no one leaves hungry.
Deciding to buy the restaurant took a couple of months for Odell; she looked at it twice and with some encouragement from her children the decision came easily thereafter. The restaurant is open 5-9 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and it is closed Sunday and Monday.
Odell works elsewhere full-time and maintains the family farm where they raise beef cattle. She spends her nights in the kitchen making all of her dishes from scratch with the help of her children and other family members.
The restaurant can seat up to 56 guests and business has been steady since opening just two months ago, says Odell. To make reservations call 764-8426.
