Bobcats get rematch with Crusaders
Bob Conway knew this date was coming: A return matchup with defending Class C champion Elmira Notre Dame.
The Crusaders ended B-G’s season a year ago, a 65-35 thrashing that was never close after the first period. “I felt last year, once we got into our offensive end and ran some offense, we had some good looks at the basket,” Conway. “But we just couldn’t get the ball up consistently against their pressure defense. We got into a hole, and it just got worse.”
Margie McKinnery returns at point guard, and again, she’ll likely defend B-G senior point guard and 1,000-point scorer, Jennifer Patten. “I hope our maturity kicks in and we play under control and with more composure,” Conway said. “I think Jennifer is better able to handle the pressure this year, and our two-guard play will handle the ball better. We also have a couple kids at the forward spots who may help us bring the ball up.”
Notre Dame’s game is simple: Pressure defense and run the court endline to endline – after a missed shot or made basket. Mallory Lawes, who hit the bullseye almost every shot in last year’s game, has filled it up this year as well, Conway said. Center Kate Egan provides balanced offense on the interior. “Lawes can really shoot the basketball,” Conway said. “She shot it well last year against us and has shot it like that all this year. Obviously we have to try and limit her opportunities, and we also have to keep Egan off the offensive glass.”
All five Bobcats starters are either in their third or fourth year as starters for Conway. In 2003-2004, the team finished 10-10, but over the last two years, B-G, 19-2 this season, has won 37 of 44 games.
“All of the kids have just grown and gotten better,” Conway said. “Getting to the Arena (Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena) is a great situation for them, because they now have a chance to win some awards. If we play great defense and take care of the basketball, you never know what might happen.”
The Bobcats face Elmira Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. Earlier that afternoon, Norwich alumni Tim Whitney, Charlie Wightman, and Bobby Lazor will be inducted into the Section IV Hall of Fame.
